Scary!

On the Wright blogger Eric Wright posts something that I would have rather ignored. New information regarding the whereabouts of Muhammed Atta and the fact that U.S. intelligence knew about it is scary enough.

But now Wright points out that this new information contradicts the official 9/11 Commission Report even though the 9/11 Commission knew about it... just doesn't sound good at all.

As someone who was in NYC on 9/11, this bothers me in ways that I can't describe. However, John Podhoretz's claim that this gaping hole in the Commission Report was solely to protect democrats' butts seems way off the mark, or at least lopsided. I'm surprised Wright buys it wholesale. After all, the commission chairman was Republican and the Commission absolved both Clinton and Bush administrations from screwing up. And it has become clearer and clearer that BOTH Clinton and Bush dropped the ball.

I'm afraid you kind of mis-characterize Mr. Podhoretz and myself. Neither one of us argue that it is definitive that this is to be blamed on Democrats, only that it raises questions considering Ms. Gorelick and the administration she worked for as well as Sandy Berger stealing documents right before he was set to testify.

I didn't buy anything wholesale...I only presented the information and wrote some questions I had. I don't know who will ultimately be at fault or if anyone will, but these questions do need to be answered.

Eric,

I agree with you that this story raises scary questions that need to be answered, especially if it so radically affects the 9/11 Commission timeline as to render it worthless.

However, while you may not be definitively blaming Clinton, I disagree with your defense of Podhoretz.

For starters, if I'm not mistaken, all the documents that Berger stole were only copies, so he didn't take anything original -- which is what makes his move so boneheaded.

Looking at The Corner on the NR site more closely, Podhoretz seems to be doing everything he can to place blame exclusively with Goerlick (did you misspell as "Gorelick" on purpose?) and Clinton while defending Bush at every turn.

For instance, Podhoretz dismisses as "ridiculous intimation" that the "Bin Laden Intent of Striking Inside the U.S." was actionable intelligence -- granted, I believe he does this in a post that you aren't directly quoting from in your post. Nevertheless, his analysis is partisan and unhelpful.

I appreciate that you were polilte in voicing your disagreement with my characterization of your post. I like your blog.

No, it's Gorelick.

As for the rest of Mr. Podhoretz analysis, I don't know for sure one way or the other what he feels about this, all I know is that the post I mentioned was nothing but questioning in nature and didn't take it to the level that you said it did originally. His other stuff may have.

Anyways, this is really only a small point so let's not bicker too much over it. Thank you for your kind words as well...and I really like your idea with this blog. It's very convenient!
